I am at work…but I can’t focus…my mind is elsewhere…
My parents made it into town late Wed. night…fleeing Ike…yep…big bad hurricane Ike.
I knew this one could potentially be a big one…why?
In 2005 when hurricane Rita was in the gulf, projected to hit my home town before turning…my dad was not pressed…even when Rita grew into a cat 5 my dad was chilling…so much so that my mother left him behind and headed on into Austin solo…well…after witnessing the destruction of Katrina, I totally flipped out, threatening to never speak to her again if Rita was what they predicted and my father’s life was put in danger…now this time around…when they announced mandatory evacuations for Freeport, TX…my father called my mom and asked what where her plans, because he did not want to be left behind this time…
Freeport TX is a peninsula… right at sea level…my parent’s home is only a few miles from the Gulf…the are predicting a storm surge up to 20 ft, and potential 50 ft waves…the beach is already awash…
My parents did not board up…my mother said she packed her, “nice clothes”, pictures, and important documents…
I don’t go home often, maybe once every 3 years…it’s like I got out and never looked back…if my parents did not leave back there, I would probably never enter the city limits…there is nothing for me in Freeport, TX…but…it’s still home…that’s where I grew up...and I would not change my small town upbringing for anything…no matter how far away I move…Freeport will always be home…I enjoyed living near the water…it’s something peaceful about it… running on the levee along the Brazos River…going with family fishing on the jetty’s in the Gulf…my friends parties (DJ and all) on one of his family’s party boat…those were fun times…and the thought that one storm can come and wash my home away…well…I can’t even imagine…
I pray that Ike comes and goes with minimal damage.
My thoughts and prayers are with all that are within Ike's path.
